San Augustine County, Texas

San Augustine County sits in the heart of Deep East Texas. It’s small, but it packs a historical punch. The county seat, also called San Augustine, claims to be the oldest town in Texas. Debatable, sure, but it has the old buildings to back it up.
The forests are thick and green. People love the Sabine National Forest. It covers a good chunk of the county. Ayish Bayou winds through the area. It’s a favorite spot for kayakers and canoeists.
The Mission Dolores State Historic Site is a must-see for visitors. Sam Houston once practiced law here. San Augustine County feels like a step back in time. But in a good way, of course.
