Aleutians West Census Area, Alaska

Aleutians West Location Map Alaska

Aleutians West Census Area is at the far end of the Aleutian Islands chain in Alaska. It’s a string of islands stretching into the Pacific Ocean. About 5,700 people live here, mostly in Unalaska and Adak.

Unalaska is a major fishing port, known for crab and other seafood. The area has a harsh climate with lots of wind and fog. World War II left its mark here, with old military sites still visible. The islands have active volcanoes. Bald eagles are so common they’re like pigeons in other places.

There are no major interstate highways to the mainland because everything comes in by boat or plane. The Aleut people have lived on these islands for thousands of years. Despite being remote, the area plays a big role in the fishing industry. Winters are long and stormy, but summers are mild. The scenery is rugged and beautiful, with treeless hills and rocky coasts.
