Dillingham Census Area, Alaska
Dillingham Census Area is in southwest Alaska, on Bristol Bay. About 5,000 people live here, spread across several small communities. Dillingham is the main town and a hub for the region.
Fishing is the biggest industry, especially for salmon. The area is famous for its huge sockeye salmon runs. Everything comes in by plane or boat so there are no interstate highways here. The land is tundra and wetlands, with no trees.
The area has a mix of Yup’ik, Aleut, and Athabascan cultures. Wildlife is abundant, including bears attracted by the salmon. Climate change is affecting the region, with warmer temperatures and changing fish patterns. Despite its remoteness, Dillingham has a community college campus.
