Bristol Bay Borough, Alaska

Bristol Bay Borough is a small area in southwest Alaska. It’s famous for its huge salmon runs, especially sockeye salmon. The borough is home to about 900 people, mostly in the towns of Naknek, South Naknek, and King Salmon.
Fishing is the main job here, with many people working in canneries or on fishing boats. The land is tundra and wetlands, with no trees. Summers are short but busy, as thousands of workers come for the fishing season.
Bears are common in the area, drawn by the salmon. The borough has a rich Native Alaskan history, with Yup’ik and Aleut cultures still strong today. Despite its small size, Bristol Bay Borough has an airport that connects it to Anchorage. The area faces debates about mining and how to protect its valuable fishing grounds.
