Chugach Census Area, Alaska

Chugach Census Area is where mountains meet the sea, and glaciers carve their way through valleys. It’s a chunk of southern Alaska that’ll take your breath away. Valdez is the area’s biggest town and sits at the end of a fjord.

Oil’s big business here. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline ends in Valdez. But it’s not all industry. The Chugach National Forest covers much of the area. Then, there’s also Wrangell-St. Elias National Park that’s partly here too.

Winters are long and dark. Summers? Short but sweet, with nearly endless daylight. The area’s history runs deep, from Native Alaskan cultures to Russian fur traders. Fishing is a way of life here. The salmon runs are legendary. Earthquakes? Yeah, they happen. The 1964 Good Friday quake reshaped the landscape.
