Alaska Boroughs

Aleutians East Borough sits on Alaska’s southern coast, stretching across the eastern Aleutian Islands. It’s a wild place.

Aleutians West Census Area is at the far end of the Aleutian Islands chain in Alaska. These islands stretch into the Pacific Ocean.

Anchorage Municipality is Alaska’s largest city and home to about 40% of the state’s population. It sits in south-central Alaska.

Bethel Census Area is in western Alaska, along the Kuskokwim River. About 18,000 people live here. Bethel is the main town.

Bristol Bay Borough is a small area in southwest Alaska. It’s famous for its huge salmon runs, especially sockeye salmon.

Chugach Census Area is where mountains meet the sea, and glaciers carve their way through valleys. Valdez is the area’s biggest town.

The Copper River Census Area is a wild section of Alaska. It’s named after the powerful river that cuts through it.

Denali Borough is in the heart of Alaska, home to North America’s tallest peak, Denali. The borough covers a huge area.

Dillingham Census Area is in southwest Alaska, on Bristol Bay. About 5,000 people live here, spread across several small communities.

Fairbanks North Star Borough is the second-largest population center in Alaska. It’s in the state’s interior, far from the coast.

Haines Borough is in Southeast Alaska, nestled between mountains and the sea. It’s a small place with about 2,500 people.

Hoonah-Angoon Census Area is in Southeast Alaska, covering parts of Chichagof and Admiralty islands. About 2,000 people live here.

Juneau City and Borough is Alaska’s capital and third-largest place. It’s in Southeast Alaska, surrounded by mountains and water.

Kenai Peninsula Borough is south of Anchorage, jutting out into the Gulf of Alaska. It’s known for its beautiful scenery and great fishing.

Ketchikan Gateway Borough is in Southeast Alaska, near the southern tip of the state. It’s known as Alaska’s “First City”.
