Calhoun County, Illinois
Calhoun County is wedged between the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. It’s one of the least populated counties in Illinois. Hardin, the county seat, is tiny.
Orchards cover the hillsides like apples and peaches. The county has no stoplights or fast food chains so it’s really that rural. Fishing and hunting are popular pastimes.
The Great River Road offers scenic drives along the bluffs. Ferry boats still cross the rivers. It’s like stepping back in time. Calhoun County is famous for its catfish and local restaurants still serve it fresh from the rivers.
