Dickens County, Texas

The Croton Breaks. That’s what they call the rugged canyons in Dickens County. This part of the Texas Plains sits about 60 miles east of Lubbock. Tough country. Beautiful, though.
Ranchers have worked this land for generations. You’ll see more cows than people most days. Dickens is the county seat. It’s tiny but it has a whole lot of heart.
The county is named after J. Dickens, who died at the Battle of the Alamo. Caprock Canyons State Park spills into the county’s northeast corner. Bison roam free there. It’s like stepping back in time.
