Jim Wells County, Texas

Jim Wells County straddles the line between South Texas brush country and coastal plain. Alice, the county seat, calls itself the “Hub City” of South Texas. Oil and gas keep the economy humming.
But agriculture is still big. You’ll see fields of cotton and grain sorghum stretching to the horizon. The county has a rich Hispanic heritage. You can taste it in the food and hear it in the music.
Premont is known for its watermelons. They’re some of the sweetest you’ll ever eat. The terrain is mostly flat, but don’t let that fool you. There’s beauty in the wide-open spaces. Hunting is popular here and so is high school football. On Friday nights, the whole county comes alive.
