Refugio County, Texas

Refugio County is down on the Texas Gulf Coast. It’s a small place with a rich history. The county seat, also named Refugio, was founded way back in 1834 as a Spanish colonial settlement.
Hurricanes are always a threat here. People here rebuild and carry on. Cattle ranching is still a big deal in these parts. You can often spot cowboys working the land, just like their ancestors did generations ago.
The county has some great birding spots. Whooping cranes, endangered and majestic, winter nearby. Oil and gas keep the economy going, but fishing is important too. The pace of life is slow here, in a good way. People take the time to stop and chat. It’s just how things are done in Refugio County.
