Zavala County, Texas

Zavala is a little county down in South Texas. It’s hot. It’s flat. And it’s full of surprises. Crystal City, the county seat, calls itself the “Spinach Capital of the World.” They’ve even got a statue of Popeye in the town square.
Farming is big here. Spinach, of course, but also onions and carrots. The winter months bring in hunters from all over, looking for white-tailed deer.
Zavala county is named after Lorenzo de Zavala, the first vice president of the Republic of Texas. The population’s small, mostly Hispanic. It’s the kind of place where a trip to the grocery store can turn into an hour-long chat with your neighbors.
