Frio County, Texas

Frio County is down in South Texas. It’s hot. Real hot. The name “Frio” means cold in Spanish, which is pretty ironic given the scorching summers. But the county is actually named after the Frio River, cutting through the county.
Pearsall is the county seat on Interstate 35. Farming is huge here including peanuts, hay, and other types of crops. But it’s the winter vegetable crops that really shine. The landscape’s pure Texas: mesquite, prickly pear, and endless sky.
Hunters flock to Frio for deer season. There’s history too. Check out the old Frio County Jail, built back in 1884. It’s a reminder of wilder times. But it’s now a museum that you can visit. Water is precious in these parts.
