Atchison County, Missouri

Atchison County sits at the very northwest corner of Missouri. The Missouri River forms its western border, separating it from Nebraska. It’s a place where the Great Plains stretch out endlessly, broken only by the occasional bluff or tree-lined creek.
Tarkio, once home to Tarkio College, still has a quaint college-town feel. Agriculture dominates the economy, with corn and soybeans being the primary crops. The county is named after David Rice Atchison, a U.S. Senator who served as President pro tempore.
The Atchison County Fair is a summer highlight, featuring livestock shows, carnival rides, and homemade pies. Despite its remote location, the county has sites related to the Lewis and Clark expedition.
