Barton County, Kansas
In the middle of Kansas, Barton County is flat as a pancake but far from boring. Great Bend, the main city, got its name from the big curve in the Arkansas River nearby.
Bird watchers flock to Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area. It’s a pretty big deal in the bird world. Then, there’s also Great Bend Airfest, that’s a treat if you’re into old planes.
There’s a good mix of small-town feel and things to do. And if you’re up for a short drive, Fort Larned gives you a taste of what frontier life was like. U.S. Route 281 and U.S. Route 56 intersect here, making it a crossroads of sorts.
