Baxter County, Arkansas
Up in north-central Arkansas, Baxter County is the playground of the Ozarks. Mountain Home, despite its sleepy name, is a bustling hub for retirees and outdoorsy types.
Two massive lakes are Norfork and Bull Shoals. The White River is famous for its trout. This river snakes through the county. Locals joke that there are more boats than cars here in the summer.
Nature lovers can explore the Ozark National Forest or hit up the Buffalo National River just a stone’s throw away. Mountain Home has a surprisingly good food scene for a small town, with plenty of spots to grab a bite after a day on the water.
