Calhoun County, Arkansas

Calhoun County is about as rural as Arkansas gets. Hampton, the tiny county seat, has fewer than 1,500 residents. This is the least populous county in the state.
But what it lacks in people it makes up for in trees as forests cover a good chunk of the county. It has prime spots for hiking and camping. Hunters flock here during deer season.
Moro Bay State Park preserves a slice of old-growth forest that’s increasingly rare in the region. But this state park occupies only a piece in the southeast corner of the state. And for a taste of local culture, check out the courthouse in Hampton.
