Kentucky Counties

Hancock County is perched on the Ohio River in northwestern Kentucky. Hawesville, the county seat, is so small you might miss it.

Hardin County, located in central Kentucky, is one of the state’s larger counties. It’s home to Fort Knox and all that gold.

Harlan County is in southeastern Kentucky, deep in coal country. The county seat is Harlan. It’s seen tough times, but it’s still kicking.

Harrison County is in north-central Kentucky, where the Bluegrass meets the hills. The county is known for its tobacco farms.

Hart County is in the middle of Kentucky and is home to a chunk of Mammoth Cave National Park. The county is big on agriculture.

Henderson County is in western Kentucky along the Ohio River. Henderson is its main town. It’s known for its connection to John James Audubon

Henry County is in north-central Kentucky, not too far from Louisville. New Castle is the county seat with a neat historic district.

Hickman County is way down in western Kentucky, right on the Mississippi River. Clinton is the county seat, located right in the center.

Hopkins County, in western Kentucky, centers around Madisonville. With about 45,000 residents, it’s one of the region’s larger counties.

Jackson County is in eastern Kentucky, right in the Daniel Boone National Forest. McKee is the county seat and Annville is a community here.

Jefferson County is home to Louisville, Kentucky’s biggest city. It’s where the Kentucky Derby happens. Think fancy hats and mint juleps.

Jessamine County’s right in the heart of bluegrass country. Nicholasville is the county seat and it’s just a stone’s throw from Lexington.

Johnson County is tucked away in eastern Kentucky. Paintsville is the county seat and is home to the U.S. 23 Country Music Highway Museum.

Kenton County is in northern Kentucky, part of the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area. Covington and Independence are the county seats.

Knott County is in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, where the rugged terrain shapes both the landscape and the way of life.
