Harlan County, Kentucky

Harlan County is tucked away in southeastern Kentucky, deep in coal country. The county seat, Harlan, has seen its share of tough times, but it’s still kicking.
These days, they’re trying to drum up tourism with ATV trails and mountain views. The county has a rep for feuds and labor disputes. There’s even a song about it.
But don’t let that scare you off . The folks here are friendly to the bone. And if you hear banjos, don’t worry. It’s probably just the local bluegrass festival. It’s right next to the Virginia border, so there’s that option too.
