Yakutat City and Borough is in Southeast Alaska, where the panhandle meets the mainland. It’s one of the largest boroughs by area but has only about 600 people.
The town of Yakutat sits on a big bay. Surfing is popular here, despite the cold water. Fishing is a major industry, especially for salmon. The Hubbard Glacier, North America’s largest tidewater glacier, is nearby.
Yakutat has a mix of Tlingit and Russian history. The area is known for its scenery, with mountains, forests, and beaches. Yakutat gets a lot of rain and snow. Despite its small size, the community has a school and a health clinic. The Yakutat Tern Festival celebrates the area’s birdlife each year.
