Gilpin County, Colorado
Gilpin County is Colorado’s second-smallest county, tucked in the mountains west of Denver. It’s known for its casinos in Black Hawk and Central City, old mining towns turned gambling hubs.
The county is only about 150 square miles, mostly steep, forested terrain. Outside the casino towns, it’s pretty rural. There’s good hiking in the national forest that covers much of the county.
The population is small, around 6,000, but swells with tourists and gamblers on weekends. Despite the casinos, much of the county keeps a quiet, mountain town feel.
