Alamosa County sits in southern Colorado, right in the middle of the San Luis Valley. It’s mostly flat, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains rising up on the east side. The Rio Grande flows through here, feeding farms and wetlands.
Alamosa, the county seat, is the biggest town. It gets seriously cold in winter and hot in summer. Farming is big business, especially potatoes. There’s a lot of history here, from old Spanish land grants to railroad boom times.
Wildlife is plentiful, especially birds in the wetlands. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is nearby, drawing in tourists to climb the massive dunes. The county is also home to Adams State University. Despite being rural, Alamosa County has its own unique vibe.
