Harney County, Oregon

Harney County is a massive chunk of southeastern Oregon. It’s seriously empty and seriously beautiful. It’s high desert country, with sagebrush plains stretching forever.
Steens Mountain looms on the horizon, a huge fault-block ridge. Migratory birds flock to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge by the millions. Burns is the county seat.
Cattle outnumber humans here by a long shot. Winters are tough. Summers are short but glorious. It’s the kind of place that gets under your skin. Wide open spaces with communities far and few between.
