Grant County, Oregon

Grant County sits in eastern Oregon, where the Blue Mountains rise up from the high desert. It’s rugged in Grant County. Prairie City and John Day are the main towns. They’ve got that frontier feel.
The John Day Fossil Beds are a major draw. Ancient landscapes frozen in colorful rock layers. Wallowa-Whitman, Malheur, and Umatilla National Forest occupy most of the county.
Ranching is big business here. So is logging, though less than in the past. Elk and deer outnumber people in most parts. Summers are hot and dry. Winters can be brutal. But the scenery? Always stunning.
