Pickens County hugs the Mississippi border in west Alabama. Carrollton is its county seat with about 20,000 people.
The Tombigbee and Sipsey Rivers form its southeastern border. U.S. Highway 82 crosses the county, making it accessible but still off the beaten path.
Agriculture, especially cattle and timber, drives the local economy. The county is named after General Andrew Pickens, a Revolutionary War hero from South Carolina.
