Sumter County occupies west Alabama along the Mississippi border, with Livingston as its seat and about 13,000 residents. The University of West Alabama in Livingston lends a collegiate atmosphere to this rural county.

Agriculture, particularly cattle farming and timber, dominates the local economy here. Driving through, U.S. Highway 80 and Interstate 20 pass through lots of these types of landscapes.

The county is named after General Thomas Sumter. He was a hero of the American Revolutionary War from South Carolina.
