Sumter County occupies west Alabama along the Mississippi border, with Livingston as its seat and about 13,000 residents. The University of West Alabama in Livingston lends a collegiate atmosphere to this rural county.

The county is named after General Thomas Sumter. He was a hero of the American Revolutionary War from South Carolina.
