Calhoun County, Alabama

Calhoun County is in northeast Alabama. About 110,000 folks live here. It’s right on I-20, halfway between Atlanta and Birmingham. The county was named after John C. Calhoun, the 7th Vice President of the United States.
Anniston is the county seat. It was once called the “Model City” for its planning and infrastructure. Fort McClellan near Anniston used to be a key location, but it closed in ’99. Now there’s a nature center where soldiers once trained.
The Talladega National Forest occupies most of the east section of Calhoun. These days, the Chief Ladiga Trail brings in cyclists from all over. Anniston has some civil rights history. Not all of it is pretty.
