Rio Grande County, Colorado
Rio Grande County is in the San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado. Del Norte is the county seat but Monte Vista is the largest town.
The Rio Grande runs through it, hence the name. Nature is key here. The Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge is important for sandhill cranes. You can see the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east.
U.S. Highway 160 crosses the county, connecting it to Alamosa and the rest of southern Colorado. The population is around 12,000, with farming and ranching playing key roles in the local economy. The county is also known for its potato farming.
