Washington County, Alabama

Washington Location Map Alabama

Washington County sprawls across southwest Alabama, claiming the title of the state’s first county. Chatom serves as the seat, with the total population hovering around 16,000.

The Tombigbee River forms its eastern border. The county is heavily wooded. But I can’t name a single national forest in this county.

U.S. Highway 43 runs through the county, making it a key route for travel between Mobile and the rest of the state. The county is also home to St. Stephens, the site of Alabama’s first territorial capital, now a historical park.
