Huerfano County, Colorado

Huerfano Location Map Colorado

Huerfano County sits in southern Colorado, basically where the plains meet the mountains. Walsenburg is the county seat, an old coal mining town.

The Spanish Peaks dominate the skyline with unique landmarks visible for miles. It’s mostly rural, with ranches spread across the eastern part.

The county’s name means “orphan” in Spanish, after the lone volcanic butte near Gardner. San Isabel National Forest is here, popular for fishing and camping. The population is small, about 6,500, and has been shrinking.
