Costilla County, Colorado
Costilla County sits at the southern end of Colorado’s San Luis Valley, bordering New Mexico. San Luis, the county seat, is the oldest town in Colorado. It’s mostly rural, with wide open spaces and mountain views.
Farming and ranching are the main industries here. The Rio Grande and Culebra Creek are vital here for irrigation to support those industries. Hunting and fishing also bring in some visitors.
The county has deep Hispanic roots, with some families tracing back to the original Spanish settlers. While the Sangre de Cristo Mountains loom to the east, the Great Sand Dunes National Park isn’t too far either.
