Kodiak Island Borough covers Kodiak Island and nearby smaller islands in the Gulf of Alaska. The main town is Kodiak, known for its fishing port and Coast Guard base.
The borough is famous for its huge brown bears, often called Kodiak bears. Fishing is the biggest industry, especially for salmon and crab. The landscape is rugged, with mountains, forests, and rocky coasts.
Kodiak has a long history, from ancient Alutiiq villages to Russian fur traders. Wildlife is everywhere so you might see whales, sea lions, and lots of birds. The island played a key role in World War II and still has old military sites.
