Macon County, Alabama
Macon County, in east-central Alabama, is known for its deep ties to African American history and education. The county’s population is only about 18,000 people. The county is all connected by U.S. Highway 80 and Interstate 85.
Tuskegee, the county seat, is home to the historic Tuskegee University. This institution was founded by Booker T. Washington, who was also the first teacher here.
With the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site and Booker T. Washington National Monument, my advice is to bring comfortable walking shoes because there’s a lot of history to explore on foot.
