Macoupin County, Illinois

Macoupin County is a part of rural Illinois, sitting between St. Louis and Springfield. Carlinville is the county seat, with this massive courthouse that looks like it belongs in a much bigger city.
The county has some weird history. Ever heard of the “Million Dollar Courthouse” scandal? Look it up. Bunker Hill has a festival every fall that draws a decent crowd. Gillespie also has some old coal mining history if you’re into that sort of thing.
It’s mostly farmland here. But there’s more hills than you’d expect in Illinois, which makes for some pretty drives in the fall. Macoupin County is a blend of history and rural life in the heart of Illinois.
