Menard County, Illinois

Menard Locator Map Illinois

Menard County sits in central Illinois, just north of Springfield. Petersburg, the county seat, is a sleepy little town with a lot of history. This was Abraham Lincoln country. Honest Abe practiced law here before he hit the big time.

The Sangamon River winds through the county, carving out some pretty scenery. It’s mostly farmland. New Salem State Historic Site is the big tourist draw. It’s a recreated 1830s village where Lincoln once lived.

Folks here are proud of their pioneer heritage. The population is small so everyone seems to know everyone else. It’s quiet. Really quiet. Star-gazing is popular because there’s not much light pollution out here.
