Ketchikan Gateway Borough is in Southeast Alaska, near the southern tip of the state. It’s known as Alaska’s “First City” because it’s often the first stop for ships coming from the south.
About 14,000 people live in the borough, mostly in Ketchikan city. The area is famous for its totem poles and Native Alaskan art. Fishing and tourism are the main industries. Ketchikan gets a lot of rain. In fact, it’s one of the wettest places in North America.
The borough includes part of Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the U.S. Cruise ships bring many visitors in summer. The area has a rich Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian heritage. Despite being remote, Ketchikan has a lively arts scene. The borough’s scenery is stunning, with mountains dropping right into the sea.
