Alaska Boroughs

Kodiak Island Borough covers Kodiak Island and nearby smaller islands in the Gulf of Alaska. The main town is Kodiak.

Kusilvak Census Area is in western Alaska, along the Yukon River delta. The census area was renamed from Wade Hampton.

Lake and Peninsula Borough is a vast, wild area in southwest Alaska. It’s about the size of West Virginia. But only has around 1,500 people.

Matanuska-Susitna Borough, often called Mat-Su, is north of Anchorage. It’s one of the fastest-growing areas in Alaska.

Nome Census Area is in western Alaska, on the Seward Peninsula. The area is known for the Nome Gold Rush of 1898.

North Slope Borough is the northernmost part of Alaska, stretching from the Brooks Range to the Arctic Ocean.

Northwest Arctic Borough covers a big chunk of northwest Alaska. The largest town is Kotzebue but there are other small villages here too.

Petersburg Borough is in Southeast Alaska, on Mitkof Island. It’s known as “Little Norway” because of its Norwegian heritage.

Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area is in Southeast Alaska, mostly on Prince of Wales Island. The area is a short distance to Canada.

Sitka City and Borough is on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska. It was once the capital of Russian America. Fishing and tourism are big.

Skagway Municipality is a small area in Southeast Alaska. It’s famous for its role in the Klondike Gold Rush.

Southeast Fairbanks Census Area is in interior Alaska, southeast of Fairbanks. About 7,000 people live here, spread out over a large area.

Wrangell City and Borough is in Southeast Alaska, on Wrangell Island. It’s one of the oldest towns in the state of Alaska.

Yakutat City and Borough is in Southeast Alaska, where the panhandle meets the mainland. It’s one of the largest boroughs by area.

Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area is the largest county in the United States. It’s 147,842 square miles, which is about the size of California.
