Escambia County, Alabama
Escambia County sits on the border between Alabama and Florida to the south. Atmore, the county seat, is known for its Native American heritage and the Poarch Creek Indian Pow Wow.
The population is around 37,000. The county takes its name from the Escambia River, which flows through it on the east side. But it’s shaped like a rectangular, elongated in the east-west direction.
Atmore houses a large prison, bringing jobs but also controversy. The annual Alabama Blueberry Festival celebrates the county’s agricultural heritage. Between the prison, the blueberries, and a casino too, Escambia County keeps things interesting.
