Monroe County lies in southwest Alabama. The county seat is Monroeville with about 20,000 residents in the whole county. U.S. Highway 84 and Highway 21 cross through the county.
The Alabama River forms most of the county’s western border with fishing and scenic drives. The county’s economy is rooted in timber and agriculture because of its vast forests and farmland.
Monroeville is where author Harper Lee and Truman Capote met and became childhood friends. The old courthouse was a model in “To Kill a Mockingbird” but it now serves as a museum.
