Gallatin County, Illinois

Gallatin County is a tiny sliver of southeastern Illinois, right on the Ohio River. Shawneetown is the county seat, an old river town with more history than people these days.
It’s one of the least populous counties in southern Illinois with barely 5,000 folks calling it home. The Shawnee National Forest creeps into the southwestern edge, bringing some hills to the otherwise flat landscape.
Farming is still the way of life, but there’s some oil and gas action too. Floods are a constant worry. The old part of Shawneetown got moved inland after one too many. On a clear day, you can see three states from the right spot along the river.
