Kusilvak Census Area, Alaska
Kusilvak Census Area is in western Alaska, along the Yukon River delta. The census area was renamed from Wade Hampton in 2015 to reflect its Yup’ik heritage.
Most residents are Yup’ik Eskimo. The main hub is Hooper Bay, but there are many small villages. There are no roads connecting to other parts of Alaska. The land is flat tundra with lots of lakes and rivers.
Many people still speak Yup’ik as their first language. The area faces challenges like erosion and lack of jobs. Despite hardships, traditional culture remains strong. Wildlife like moose, waterfowl, and fish are important food sources. People get around mostly by plane, boat, or snowmobile.
