Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska

Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area is the largest county in the United States by area. It’s 147,842 square miles, which is about the size of California. But it only has about 5,000 people. Most folks live in small villages along the Yukon and Koyukuk rivers.
There are no cities here. Galena is the largest town. The area is mostly wilderness, with forests and tundra. Many people still rely on hunting and fishing.
There are few roads. That’s right. People get around by plane, boat, or snowmobile. The Iditarod Trail runs through here. The area has a strong Athabascan Native culture. Mining used to be big, but now government jobs are important. Tourism is growing, with people coming for hunting, fishing, and wilderness experiences.
