La Plata County, Colorado
La Plata County is tucked away in southwest Colorado. Durango is the main town, which has that cool old west vibe with a dash of college town thrown in.
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a big draw. It’s like riding through a postcard. There is killer skiing at Purgatory Resort. Mesa Verde National Park is nearby if you are into ancient cliff dwellings.
The Animas River runs right through the county, great for rafting or fishing. U.S. Highway 550, part of the scenic Million Dollar Highway, cuts through the county. The population is around 57,000 people.
