Benewah County is situated in Idaho’s panhandle, a place of forests, lakes, and small towns. St. Maries, the county seat, sits at the confluence of two rivers. It’s an old logging town trying to reinvent itself.
The St. Joe River is legendary among fly fishermen. Heyburn State Park, Idaho’s oldest, offers camping and boating on Lake Chatcolet. This is Coeur d’Alene tribal land, and their influence is still strong. Locals are proud of their annual Paul Bunyan Days festival.
The county is mostly rural, with a mix of farms and timberland. Winters can be long and gloomy. But summers are gorgeous, drawing tourists and second-home owners. There’s a strong independent streak in Benewah County. People here value their privacy and self-reliance.
