Butte County, Idaho

Butte County is a tiny slice of Idaho that most folks drive right through. It’s high desert country, with the Lost River Range towering to the west. Arco is the county seat and claims to be the first town in the world lit by atomic power.
You’ll see more antelope than people in some areas. Craters of the Moon National Monument is located just to the south. It’s a bizarre landscape of lava flows and cinder cones.
Ranching is still big here. Summers are blazing hot, winters brutal. The Big Lost River really does get lost, sinking into the lava plains. There’s a sense of isolation that some folks love and others can’t stand.
