Adams County, Idaho
Adams County is a rural slice of western Idaho, hugging the Snake River along the Oregon border. The county seat, Council, is a tiny town that feels like a step back in time. Ranching and logging drive the local economy.
The Payette National Forest covers much of the county, offering endless outdoor recreation. Hunters flock here for elk season. Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge, forms part of the western border. It’s jaw-dropping but hard to access.
Unfortunately, the county’s population is shrinking as young people leave for bigger cities. Those who stay value their independence and elbow room. You won’t find fancy restaurants or nightlife. But you will find stunning night skies and down-to-earth folks.
