Custer County, Idaho
Custer County is smack in the middle of Idaho, a place of rugged mountains and remote valleys. Stanley, the tourist hot spot, sits at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains. It’s drop-dead gorgeous but brutally cold.
This is where the real Idaho outdoors lovers come to play. Rivers for rafting, peaks for climbing, trails for hiking. You got it. The Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness is partially here. It’s the largest wilderness area in the lower 48.
The county seat is Challis, which is a bit more livable. Ranching is still big in the entire county but tourism is taking over. You’ll see cowboys and river guides drinking in the same bars. Here, the population’s tiny and spread out.
