Gove County, Kansas
Out in western Kansas, Gove County is a flat area with only about 2,700 residents spread thin. Gove City is the county seat. But Oakley has this huge statue of Buffalo Bill that’s worth a quick pic if you’re on the Western Vistas Historic Byway.
The real draw in the entire county is Monument Rocks though. These crazy chalk formations jutting out of the prairie like some mini Stonehenge.
The Fick Fossil Museum is super neat. We’re talking prehistoric ocean creatures found right here in Kansas. If you’re around in August, hit up the Gove County Fair for some real small-town fun. And keep an eye out for fossil hunting tours. You might just dig up a mosasaur tooth.
